Sand Cherry
Scientific name
Prunus pumila
Description
Sand Cherry is a low growing, wide spreading shrub with acidic/bitter reddish-purple fruit and little white flowers with yellow stamens that bloom in the spring. The fruit makes it a great food source for wildlife such as birds. The leaves thick and waxy in appearance and alternatively arranged.
Planting conditions
Sandy Cherry is commonly found in dry sandy or rocky locations such as shorelines or dunes with full or part sun. If this shrub is grown in moist fertile soil, it will become larger in size (up to 8 ft or more) than what normally occurs in its native habitat.
