Rough Blazing Star
Scientific name
Liatris aspera
Description
Rough Blazing Star is wildflower native only to Ontario within Canada. This late blooming upright flower has a cluster of densely packed pink-purple flowers. The stamens and styles protrude from the tufted flower head, giving it a rough fuzzy appearance, giving it its name. It attracts a wealth of pollinators including Hummingbird and butterflies; partly due to its long, slender, lance-shaped leaves that give off a vibrant blue-green colour during the summer.
Planting conditions
Rough Blazing Star does well in full sun with dry to well-drained conditions and slightly acidic, nutrient poor, sandy soils; however, it also tolerates more fertile soils, as well as those that contain clay, loam, or rock. It is commonly found in dry prairies, open woodlands, savannas, glades, and along roadsides and railroads.
