Description

The Trumpet Vine is a visually appealing vine species that can reach a height of 10 m if supported, or can take the form of a small shrub in the absence of surrounding support. The leaves are light to dark green, ovate shaped, 3-10 cm long, oppositely arranged, and have toothed margins. This species is most distinguishable by its large, trumpet-shaped, orange-red flowers that grow in clusters in the summer. Trumpet Vine is a fast growing and vigorous colonizer due to its self-seeding and suckering abilities. This species can aggressively climb nearby shrubs and saplings, which may result in strangling and killing them. Thus, pruning and maintenance may be required to contain this plant and to prevent it from overwhelming surrounding vegetation. The flowers of Trumpet Vine are a favorite choice for Hummingbirds during the summer once the plant has bloomed.
