Description

The Prairie Rose, also referred to as the Climbing Rose is found across Ontario. This species is a small, deciduous shrub which possesses unique climbing characteristics typical to a vine. Given stable conditions, the Prairie Rose can reach 4 m. If no attachment points are available, this species will grow into an irregular, low lying shrub. The Prairie Rose yields deep pink, five-petaled flowers that bloom late in the spring, attracting numerous pollinators. By early autumn, red rose hips begin to appear. This thorny shrub produces sharp pointed, compound leaves, with ovate leaflets that have serrated edges. During the fall, the foliage turns a pale yellow or yellow-green colour.

Planting conditions

Suitable for light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) soils. Prefers well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade or full sun. It prefers moist soil conditions.
