Dutchman’s Pipe
Scientific name
Aristolochia durior
Description
The Dutchman's Pipe is a vigorous twining vine with large, heart-shaped green leaves, which are most popular aspect of the vine. They are excellent for creating shade as they climb up porches and trellises. This vine produces inconspicuous, brown-purple, pipe-shaped flowers, which are three-lobed and are a great attractant for butterflies. The fruiting bodies resembles a cucumber which hangs off the vine. This plant can reach heights of 5-10 m if planted near a tall structure.
Planting conditions
The Dutchman's Pipe grows best in moist, well-drained soils with adequate sun exposure, making it a great vine to plant along riverbanks.
