Prairie June Grass
Scientific name
Koeleria macrantha
Description
The Prairie June grass is a short, cool-season grass that can grow up to 60 cm in height. It is a native of much of North America and Eurasia where it will often naturalize fallow fields. It is often used in a restoration context due to its ability to stabilize soil erosion. Prairie June grass has basal leaves (up to 18 cm long) and are grey-green to bright green in appearance. Light green inflorescences open in late spring and change to a silver colour as the season progresses.
Planting conditions
Prairie June grass prefers well-drained soil and prefers partial to full sun exposure. It can tolerate temporary drought and does well in poor soils such as sand.
