Description

Blanketflower is a perennial wildflower species that typically grows about 1 m in height. This plant may also be known by the common names: Common Gaillardia or Brown Eyed Susan. The leaves are mostly basal, green, densely hairy, and are oblong to lance shaped. The flowers are showy, reddish orange with yellow tips, have three lobed petals, have dark reddish to brown coloured centers, appear at the end of a long hairy stalk, and bloom from July to September. The flowers are attractive to pollinator species like bees and butterflies. The seed heads are beneficial to bird species. This wildflower species is valuable for rehabilitation of disturbed sites.

Planting conditions

Blanketflower grows best in normal to dry conditions with full sun exposure. It prefers sand or loam soil type with neutral to acidic pH level. It can tolerate drought, acidity, and infertile soil. However, it is intolerant of wet or clay soil. This wildflower naturally occurs in meadows, prairies, mountain foothills, and on dry rocky shorelines.
