Description

Long Headed Thimbleweed is a perennial wildflower species that can grow up to 0.5 m in height. This plant may also be known by the common names Long Headed Anemone or Windflower. The leaves are palmately compound, deeply lobed, hairy, and have both large basal leaves and whorls along the stem. The flowers are showy, greenish white colored, hairy, have five pointed petals, a cone like center, appear on long flowering stalks, and bloom between June and August. These flowers produce long, cylindrical cones that will release many cottony seeds into the wind.

Planting conditions

Long Headed Thimbleweed grows best in normal to dry conditions with full or partial sun exposure. It prefers well-drained sandy or gritty loam. It is tolerant of drought but young plants should be watered during dry periods until established. This wildflower can be naturally found in prairies, open forests, near roadsides, and along dry upland shorelines.
