Description

Black Raspberry is a prickly deciduous shrub species that will grow about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are alternately arranged, green coloured, pinnately compound with 3 leaflets, have pointed tips, coarsely toothed margins, and the undersides are covered in silvery hairs. The flowers are small, white coloured, have five petals, have five triangular sepals, appear in flat clusters, and bloom between May and June. The fruit are purplish black coloured and appear in clusters similar appearance to raspberry. The fruits are edible to humans and very tasty. The fruits are also beneficial to wildlife species, like birds and small mammals. This shrub spreads into large colonies and can be used for filling in un-vegetated areas.

Planting conditions

Black Raspberry grows best in normal to moist conditions with full sun or partial sun exposure. It prefers well-drained, sand or loam soil types. The shrub can be naturally found in open forests, forest edges, wet meadows, roadside ditches, and along stream or lake shorelines.
