Description

Virginia Rose is a thorny deciduous shrub species that will grow about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are alternately arranged, pinnately compound with 7-9 leaflets, are dark green coloured, and have serrated margins. The flowers are pink coloured, fragrant, showy, appear in singles, and bloom in June. The fruit are small, bright red hips, which mature in August and remain on the plant throughout the winter. The flowers are beneficial to pollinator species, like bees and butterflies. The fruits are also beneficial to wildlife species, like birds and small mammals. This shrub is fairly hardy and grows easily with little maintenance but pruning may be desired.

Planting conditions

Virginia Rose grows best in moist to normal conditions with full sun exposure. It prefers well-drained sand or loam soil types. It can tolerate acidic soil, salinity, and various soil types. This shrub can be naturally found in open forests, thickets, and along river or lake shorelines.
