Fringed Sage
Scientific name
Artemisia frigida
Description
The Fringed Sagebrush is a shrub like, herbaceous, perennial groundcover species that can grow up to 0.5 m in height. This plant may also be known by common names: Silky Wormwood, Prairie Sagewort, Pasture Sagebrush, or Mountain Sage. The leaves are small, 2.5-3 cm long, finely divided and feathery, have silky silvery white hairs, and have a strong aroma. The flowers are small and yellow coloured abundantly appearing on long, erect, branching clusters in the summer. This plant can spread quickly and aggressively in open areas so may require some maintenance to limit the unwanted development.
Planting conditions
Fringed Sagebrush grows best in dry conditions with full sun exposure. It prefers well drained soil and is intolerant of flooding or moist soil. It is drought tolerant and could be chosen for planting on dry sites or upland areas. This plant is naturally found in grasslands, open forests, on dry slopes, and along sandy shorelines.
