Slimleaf Onion

Scientific name

Allium Amplectens

Slim-leaf Onion, also called ornamental onion, paper onion, or narrow-leaved onion, is a beautiful and hardy perennial herb that typically grows 0.1-0.3m tall. Each plant comes from an egg-shaped scaled bulb that is pinkish-brown in colour. On top of their hairless green stems, they have beautiful lobe-shaped flowerheads that reach up to 7cm across and contain 10-50 star-shaped white florets with light purple stamens and anthers. They naturalize easily and spread quickly to form a beautiful ground cover. All parts of the plant have a strong onion smell when crushed, and they are a favourite of many pollinators, especially butterflies.

Planting conditions

Slim-leaf Onion grows best with full sun exposure and in clayey soils that are seasonally wet but dry completely in the summer. They can often be found on rocky bluffs, in woodlands, or along the bases of riverside cliffs.
