Purple Flowering Raspberry
Scientific name
Rubus odoratus
Description
Purple Flowering Raspberry is a medium-sized thornless raspberry shrub with maple-like leaves and showy purple flowers that bloom in early summer and continue throughout the season. The fragrant colorful blooms attract pollinators, and the fruit is highly sought by birds and other wildlife. The fruit is edible but lacks sweetness and flavor. The flowers of Rubus odoratus are somewhat self-fertile, but when planted in threes or more, the shrubs will produce more fruit.
Planting conditions
It prefers medium to moist, well-drained soils, but tolerates a wide range of adverse conditions and has good shade tolerance. It is best to situate this plant where it has plenty of room to spread. Adjacent plants, pathways, and lawn may effectively slow the plants’ suckering tendencies. It can tolerate moist soil, partial shade, and grows well at woodland edges.
